Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen took part in a round table on artificial intelligence and bioethics

On June 18, 2024, under the chairmanship of Metropolitan Kliment of Kaluga and Borovsk, a round table on the issues of artificial intelligence and bioethics was held in the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in an online-remote format.

The event was held as part of the activities of the Inter-Council Presence commission on issues of public life, culture, science and information. The experts of this commission assess the modern challenges of scientific and technological development from a Christian perspective.

The manager of the affairs of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District, Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen, took part in the meeting.

The event was opened by Metropolitan Clement, who noted: “The most rapidly developing branches of science and technology also contain the greatest number of moral questions and forks. These industries undoubtedly include biomedical research and genetics, as well as artificial intelligence. The desire to take experiments beyond the limits of any ethical regulation, to achieve results as quickly as possible at any cost, forces us to observe the ongoing development of research issues with special attention.”

Corresponding Member of the RAS A.M. Kudryavtsev made a presentation “Ethical challenges of high technologies: genetics.” He touched upon the use of genetic technologies in biomedicine, agriculture and industry, also touched upon issues related to biosafety.

Advisor to the Director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Problems of the Federal Research Center "Informatics and Management" A.O. Gurdus presented the report “Artificial Intelligence: State of the Problem and Moral Issues.” He introduced the audience to the basic principles of neural networks and noted the risks of using artificial intelligence associated with the human factor.

Priest Vladimir Dukhovich, a member of the Ethics Committee of the Federal Scientific and Clinical Center for Physical and Chemical Medicine of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia, gave a presentation on “Aging and Transhumanism.” He focused on key areas in the development of longevity medicine; touched upon the topics of genome editing, euthanasia and “digital immortality.”
